It’s Friday afternoon as I post this, and I feel we should indulge in a tiny bit of humorous non-rock’n’roll trivia – but make no mistake, this very much still rocks. I’m talking about the collector’s item Patrick Stewart’s Cowboy Classics from 2016.
Yes, it is Captain Picard himself – or Professor X, if you like – doing exactly what it says on the cover: reinventing himself as a lonesome, range-prowling cowboy crooner, giving his all in a number of old-style country music renditions.
A promotional video was put together to promote the release. It shows Stewart in full cowboy regalia, donning spurs and chaps, belting snippets of tunes from the wild west songbook like Rawhide, Buttons and Bows, and Streets of Laredo. It appears to cover a vast back catalogue of albums, such as Songs For Lonesome Lovers and Duets Out West, the latter promising collaborations with Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood, and Stewart’s wife Sunny Ozell. To top it off, Cowboy Pat has even cobbled together a holiday treat, Christmas On the Range.
While tragically the millions of copies of Patrick Stewart’s Cowboy Classics are all sold out and seem mysteriously impossible to find (ahem), a five-song sampler that was also made available for download and physical purchase in significantly smaller numbers has inexplicably proven far less elusive to locate. Released on 30 June 2016, this collection features full performances of Buttons and Bows, Don’t Fence Me In, Ringo, I’m An Old Cowhand (featuring Ozell), and Here Comes Santa Claus.
This EP project was done for charity, with all proceeds benefitting the International Rescue Committee, a global humanitarian aid, relief, and development organization. Don’t expect this novelty item to stay in print when sold out.
